The Rolls-Royce Spectre ‘Lunaflair’ Has a Custom Holographic Paint Finish
Posted: 7th of October 2024 by Platinum Auto
First established by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce in early 1904, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has become synonymous with automotive luxury and exclusivity — and for good reason. With the least expensive vehicle in its lineup starting at just over $340,000 (US Market), it pretty much goes without saying that Rolls-Royce produces some of the finest automobiles on the planet. For those that deem Rolls’ production vehicles not exclusive enough, the luxury marque does give its most elite — and most affluent — clients the option to commission bespoke factory-built one-offs that typically cost well into seven-figure territory.
And the Bespoke program’s latest one-of-one example to break cover is the Rolls-Royce Spectre Lunaflair Commission.
Astrological Inspiration
Built for a U.S.-based client that helped design, develop, and option the project hand-in-hand with Rolls’ Bespoke division, the Spectre Lunaflair takes influence from the lunar halo effect, which takes on the appearance of a vibrant ring of light encompassing the moon — an optical phenomenon that occurs when moonlight passes through ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds, enabling them to act as microscopic prisms, refracting the light and generating a special effect — not unlike shining a light through a diamond.
A Holographic Livery
One of the signature treatments that Rolls’ Bespoke division often bestows upon its one-off works is elaborate, highly-involved paint jobs and liveries, and the Spectre Lunaflair was by no means an exception. The Spectre Lunaflair’s finish spent well over a year being developed and experimented with, having its paint chemistry, application timings, and base coat meticulously tweaked along the way. This extensive R&D resulted in a seven-layer lacquer-based livery that includes a pearlescent coat that’s infused with fine flakes of magnesium fluoride and aluminum. Described as a holographic paint finish with a “rainbow” effect, this elaborate paint job gives off a deep metallic look in darker settings and rainbow, pearlescent effect when viewed in direct light.
A World-Class Interior
No Bespoke Rolls-Royce is completely without a completely customized interior, and the Spectre Lunaflair is no different in this regard. The factory-built one-of-one now boasts a Navy Blue, White, and Peony Pink color scheme adorning its seats, doors, Starlight Headliner, and dual-tone steering wheel — a theme that mimics the hues that occur during a lunar halo.
Under The Hood
This cliental-commissioned one-off is based on the luxury manufacturer’s fully-electric Spectre model. Though its paintwork and interior have been heavily customized, everything under the proverbial hood goes unchanged. That means this one-off has a dual motor setup cranking out 577hp and 664-ft-lbs of instantaneous torque — specs that allows the high-performance EV to clock 0-60mph runs in 4.4 seconds. Boasting a top speed electronically limited to 155mph, the electric Rolls has a range of around 330 miles per charge.
Straight From The Horse’s Mouth
“We are constantly astounded by the diversity of ideas that inform our clients’ Bespoke concepts, which frequently draw inspiration from materials, finishes and themes they see in other commissions,” explains Martina Starke, Head of Bespoke Design for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Spectre Lunaflair is the perfect example of this, exploring the ethereal beauty of a lunar halo and sparked by the client after witnessing a paint finish on another Bespoke motor car. This symbiotic relationship and cross-pollination of ideas is fostering a ‘virtuous circle’ of innovation and creativity, which is incredibly important to our team of Bespoke designers, as we focus on delivering unparalleled value to those who entrust us with their vision.”
Pricing & Availability
As a one-off commission, the Rolls-Royce Spectre Lunaflair was already spoken for as soon as the project began, and as such is not for sale. Pricing wasn’t made available to the public, either. The regular Spectre is available, however, starting from $422,750 (US Market).
